About us

Radio AF, Sweden's largest student radio station, is a non-profit organization for students and members of the Academic Society (Akademiska Föreningen) in Lund. At Radio AF, both live radio and podcasts are produced from the station’s facilities in the AF Building. Radio AF is part of the Academic Society (AF), the Swedish Student Radio Association (SRS), and Folkuniversitetet. The station broadcasts live online 24/7, every day of the week. Radio AF has approximately 100–200 members and 30 editorial teams that broadcast live shows and create programs across a wide range of categories.

Radio AF organizes fun activities for its members every semester, such as banquets and pub nights hosted by the station's social events managers (sexmästare). Additionally, the station provides the DJ performance in Stadsparken on the last day of April and hosts a marathon broadcast for Musikhjälpen every year.

The legally responsible publisher at Radio AF is the station manager, a democratically elected member who works full-time at the station for one year. In addition to the station manager, around 20 elected members are responsible for different aspects of the station’s operations. All leadership roles are elected during the station’s semester meetings, where all members have voting rights. The semester meetings are also open to proposals, where members can submit suggestions for changes and vote on them.

History

Radio AF was founded in 1982 and the broadcasting started on the 1st of November the same year. Radio AF, which also went under the name Radio P4, was born through the merge of the then-already existing stations Lund student unions' and Academic Society’s Radio LSAF, the Technology Union’s Radio TLTH, and Hemgården’s Radio Concorde. Throughout the 80s, the station was called Radio P4 during the summers and Radio AF during the academic semesters, before eventually adopting the same Radio AF. In 1991 Radio AF moved to new premises inside AF Borgen and started broadcasting at frequency 99,1 MHz. 2014 they switched from FM broadcasting to online broadcasting.

Several members have aspired to careers in journalism and media through their engagement at Radio AF. In the year 2007 the station won Nöjesguiden’s prize in the category “Media of the Year”, and 2013 a show hosted by Radio AF received Stora Radiopriset in the category “Community Radio of the Year”.

Join the radio

Every semester Radio AF hosts an introductory course for new members. The introductory course hosts around 50 people and includes lectures, technical labs, workshops, and social events. A compulsory part of the introductory course is to, together with other participants, host a radio show with a decided theme. The introductory course ends with a diploma ceremony where the participants receive a diploma in radio production that ensures the course has been completed.

The introductory course is mandatory and gives a lifelong membership at Radio AF. The price and dates for the introductory course vary and are decided upon at the beginning of each semester. Email urc-a@radioaf.se or urc-b@radioaf.se for more information.
